Plastics Project
Pollution from single-use plastics harms our planet, our wildlife, and our own health. Much of this pollution comes from plastic items we don't need in our lives at all - from plastic grocery bags to polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) takeout food containers. The plastics project aims to push forward both local and statewide legislation to ban single-use plastic bags. Currently, we are focused on forming key partnerships with other organizations, such as ANJEC and the Plastic Pollution Coalition, & taking action for a state plastics bill to pass through the state Assembly.

Sophia Ludtke
Publicity & Communications Coordinator
Newark Academy - Class of 2020
Sophia is from Gladstone, NJ and is very excited to serve as the Publicity & Communications Coordinator again this year and work with such an inspiring group of people! As co-president of her school’s Environmental Club, she has co-organized a regional High School Environmental Summit for over 15 local high schools. As President of the student body, she has persuaded her school administration to pass a sustainability proposal and create a school-wide Sustainability Committee. Last fall, Sophia traveled to California as a Project Green Challenge finalist where she visited a Buddhist practice center and witnessed the devastating effects of the California wildfires, which inspired her to perform a spoken word poem about religion and environmentalism at the Apollo Theater in New York City last spring through Climate Speaks. Sophia is also a dancer with the modern dance company In Motion, is interested in neuroscience, enjoys running and hiking, and hopes to someday bike across America.
